The Blessing

In The Blessing, Jake Weidmann gives visual form to the ancient Aaronic blessing of Numbers 6:24–26, weaving sacred word and image into an intricate portrait of faith, inheritance, and generational blessing.

At the heart of the composition, the words of Scripture unfold through the branches of an ancient oak:

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”

Three times the name LORD rises prominently from the text, each rendered in elaborate flourishing and surrounded by unfurling oak leaves. This threefold repetition creates a visual and theological rhythm—a triune echo running through the blessing as the words descend toward the great oak from which they seem to grow.

The tree stands deeply rooted beneath them, its massive trunk bearing the weight of generations while its branches reach upward into the words of blessing. Oak leaves, ornamental flourishes, and calligraphic forms become nearly indistinguishable from one another, suggesting a blessing that is not merely spoken but takes root, grows, shelters, and endures.

At the base, Weidmann anchors the work with the declaration: “May His favor be upon you for a thousand generations.” The inscription transforms the tree into more than a symbol of strength—it becomes an image of spiritual inheritance, connecting the faithfulness of one generation to those yet to come.
