His Eye is On the Sparrow

$ 350 $ 400

Following the decorated style of his last hymn of 'It Is Well With My Soul,' Weidmann's latest gallery release brings beautiful imagery to the celebrated Gospel hymn, 'His Eye is On the Sparrow' --Written 113 years ago, the lyrics still grip the hearts of people today.

Originally written by Civilla D. Martin in the early spring of 1905, the lyrics were the outcome of an experience Martin and her husband shared with a crippled couple whom they had formed a deep friendship with. Upon asking where their bright hopefulness came from, despite their limiting physical conditions, they shared their secret in a single line of beauty and simplicity: "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me." These words of boundless faith spurred the imagination of Civilla Martin and continue to have a lasting impact on the souls of many to this day.

The calligraphic script of lyrics encircles the Sparrow, perched on a blooming branch to signify the time in which Civilla Martin would have first penned these lyrics in early spring of 1905. As the viewer reads through this hymn, line-by-line, they circumvent this fragile bird, being reminded of His faithful watch over us. Around the nest of lyrics, a floral wreath hails on either side, containing spring-blooming flowers. Among them are daisies, crocus, peonies, tulips, and daffodils: each one chosen for its symbolism of cheerfulness, brightness, compassion, perfect love, rebirth, faith and everlasting life.

The banner in the title represents not only the method in which this hymn was first written, on pen and paper, but signifies a banner of Truth and Protection over the Sparrow -- Does God not wave the same banner over our lives through the scriptures? A banner of promise and faithfulness.

The theme of the song is inspired by the words of David in the Psalms and Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew in the Bible:

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." Psalm 32:8, NIV

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" Matthew 6:26, NIV

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." Matthew 10:29–31, NIV
