Jake Weidmann
Crown of Script
The reformation of traditional verbiage is a prevailing theme in Weidmann’s work. He strives to take calligraphy to a new level within fine art, as shown in this piece which dictates Isaiah 53:4-5 in one continuous trajectory. The line intersects upon itself ten times, ending at its beginning to create a crown of thorns from the written word. A drop of blood indicates the struggle described in the verses: “Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds, we are healed.”
