In the quiet corners of Oxford’s pubs and college halls, a remarkable fellowship gathered around stories, pipe smoke, and imagination. The Inklings—most notably C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien—were writers, scholars, and friends whose conversations would shape some of the most beloved worlds in literature. Through spirited debate and shared wonder, they encouraged one another toward deeper truth, beauty, and myth.
This evocative artwork captures Tolkien and Lewis emerging from swirling smoke from a long-stemmed churchwarden pipe, a visual meditation on friendship, creativity, and the mysterious spark of inspiration that gave rise to Narnia, Middle-earth, and beyond. Weidmann tediously rendered these two beloved figures of faith and literature in many layers of thin oil glazes on dyed calfskin vellum. The natural texture of the vellum subtly shows through in tones of coffee-brown like a cover of an old leather-bound book. A gilded frame of 23 karat shell gold frames the composition. Insignia of a dragon and a lion adorn the lower corners beneath the portraits of Tolkien and Lewis as a subtle nod to their identities and the correlative central characters in their respective epic tales.
Originally done in oil paint on calfskin vellum, this artwork is now available as a museum-quality limited edition fine art print, faithfully preserving the atmosphere and texture of the original work.
A timeless piece for lovers of literature, myth, and the enduring power of imagination.
